Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common condition which affects how a woman’s ovaries function. It is not a curable condition but the main symptoms can be treated with the assistance of a doctor, as well as secondary treatments to relieve a number of these symptoms.

It’s difficult to pin point exactly how many women experience PCOS, but it is thought to affect around 1 in every 10 women in the UK. Around half of these women will experience one or more symptoms of PCOS.

At IHYA Clinic in Birmingham, we offer a range of clinically-proven treatments to help you to reduce or even stop some of the negative effects that PSCOS can have on the body. We also offer treatments to help you cope emotionally with this condition, and its symptoms.

Symptoms of PCOS

Some of the symptoms may include:

  • Irregular periods, or no periods at all at an age where you should be having them
  • Difficulty in becoming pregnant due to the infrequent ovulation or lack of ovulation
  • Excessive hair growth (hirsutism) on areas such as the face, back, chest or buttocks
  • Weight gain
  • Thinning hair or hair loss from the head
  • Acne prone or oily skin

Symptoms are usually noticed in the late teens to twenties.

Causes of PCOS

The exact cause of PCOS is unknown, but it is often genetic. PCOS is related to abnormal hormones in the body, including high levels of insulin (the hormone which controls sugar levels in the body). Many women with PCOS are found to be resistant to the function of insulin and produce higher levels, to overcome this. This contributes to the increased production of testosterone and other activity hormones. Being overweight or obese also increases the quantity of insulin that the body produces.

There are three main features of PCOS

Irregular periods

Where the ovaries do not regularly release eggs

Enlarged ovaries

That contain fluid-filled sacs (follicles) which surround the eggs (despite the name of the condition, these are not actually cysts)

Excess androgen

Too much of this male hormone leading to physical signs such as excess facial or body hair

Treatments for PCOS

Prior to offering treatment for some of the symptoms of PCOS, we will ask that you either have confirmation from your GP or have a consultation with a medical practitioner, here at the clinic to accurately diagnose your PCOS. Once we have established the root cause of your specific symptoms, we can then create a bespoke treatment plan, for your requirements.
