Laser Hair Reduction at Ihya

If you are someone who experiences excessive or unwanted hair, you are most definitely not alone. Conditions such as Hirsutism, Hypertrichosis and PCOS can mean that darker, thicker hairs can grow in places where they should not. However, it can be simply genetics that can cause unwanted or excessive hair. In the long and distant past, hair removal used to be a chore – annoying shaving, painful waxing and smelly depilatory creams were our only options. However, laser hair removal has long been a more attractive and longer-term solution for those of us wishing to achieve permanent reduction of unwanted facial and bodily hair. At Ihya in the heart of Birmingham, we understand and recognise the embarrassment that excess hair can cause and offer laser hair removal using the GentleMax pro Plus device from Candela, for effective long-term hair reduction/removal.

What is laser hair reduction/removal

Laser hair removal is a device-led, clinically-proven treatment to permanently reduce unwanted or excessive hair, growing on the face or the body. It utilises specifically selected wavelengths of light energy to target the hair follicle and to put the follicle ‘to sleep’. The result is a significant and usually permanent reduction of the hair growth and in most instances, patients find they never have to worry about excess hair again.

Our Aesthetic Practitioners are highly skilled in providing the most effective hair reduction results using our industry leading laser hair removal technology, Candela GentleMax Pro Plus.

What are the contraindications to laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal with GentleMax Pro Plus is a very gentle and virtually ‘pain-free’ treatment, which makes it accessible to most patients. However, there are some contraindications which may restrict or prevent the treatment. You will be requested to disclose your medical history so that we can ensure the treatment will be safe for you to undergo.

Contraindications include

  • Pregnancy & nursing mothers
  • Chemical or powder burns on the area to be treated
  • A history of haemorrhaging or excessive bleeding
  • Tattoos on the area to be treated
  • Use of photosensitising drugs
  • Use of some specific vitamin A / carotene supplements
  • Poor blood circulation (heavy leg syndrome)

Am I suitable for laser hair removal with the GentleMax Pro Plus at Ihya?

Candela GentleMax Pro Plus is the safest, FDA approved Alexandrite laser method of hair removal, suitable for all skin types, including dark and tanned skin. Therefore, most patients who are experiencing excessive or unwanted hair, can benefit a course of laser hair removal treatments here at Ihya. However, we will always request that you attend a no obligation consultation, prior to your course of laser hair removal treatment, so we can ensure there is no medical reasons that we cannot proceed.

What happens during a laser hair removal treatment at Ihya?

Once we have concluded that laser hair removal will be both safe and suitable for you to undergo, you will be requested to shave the area/s to be treated, before arriving for your procedure. Your skin will be cleansed and your Ihya practitioner will pass the device head over your skin. The wavelengths of light will penetrate your skin and you may feel some warmth and a snapping sensation, rather like an elastic band being flicked on to your skin. You will be wearing goggles to protect your eyes, throughout the treatment.

Once the treatment applicator has been passed completely over the treatment areas, the treatment will be complete and you can return to your daily activities.

How many treatments will I need?

A course of several treatments will be required, as the hairs in anagen phase are the only ones which are affected by the laser and our hairs grow at varying rates. Your Ihya practitioner will discuss the number of treatments which may be required in your pre-treatment consultation. There are several factors which influence the number of treatments which may be required for optimum results, such as the area/s of the face or body to be treated, the colour / tone of your skin, the colour of your hair follicles, the thickness of the hair being treated and any medical conditions which may influence hair growth.

When will I see the results and how long do they last?

Some results may be seen in as little as one treatment as the Motus AY is so powerful. However, we usually recommend a course, as laser hair removal only affects the hairs in the anagen phase of growth (approximately 85% to 90% in any one session). A laser hair removal treatment once every 4 to 6 weeks is recommended, and you will most likely start to see significant results after their second or third treatment. Laser hair removal with Motus AY can offer permanent results ( a permanent reduction in the amount of hair growing in any one area). However, it’s important to be aware that hormonal changes, such as the menopause can mean that sometimes hair follicles can be re-stimulated. In cases such as this, we recommend maintenance sessions to take place as and when re-growth is noticed.
